M & G Pools services in-ground pools exclusively. We do not service, repair or supply equipment for above-ground pools, and we do not service hot tubs or spas.

Who We Are

What M & G Pools Does

M & G Pools services, repairs and replaces equipment on in-ground pools across the eastern suburbs of Cleveland and the Route 91 corridor. The work splits into four things: seasonal openings and closings, equipment repair and replacement, custom safety covers, and chemical and equipment checks through the season. We are a service company — we do not build pools, and we do not service above-ground pools, hot tubs or spas.

That last point saves everyone a phone call. If you have an in-ground pool and something on it has stopped working, or the season is turning, you are in the right place.

The Problem

The Two Calls We Get Most

Something Is Failing

The first is a pump that has started making a noise it did not make last year, or a heater that lights and then cuts out, or a system that will not hold pressure. Something is failing and it is not obvious what.

The Season Is Turning

The second is seasonal, and it is the one people leave too long. A pool that was not properly winterized is a pool with water sitting in a line somewhere, and water sitting in a line through a Northeast Ohio February is how a cracked pump housing or a split heater exchanger happens. The repair costs considerably more than the closing did.

Both calls are the same underlying problem: a pool is a system of pumps, filters, heaters, plumbing and controls, and when one part drifts out of spec the symptom often shows up somewhere else entirely.

The Itemised Scope

What a Visit Actually Includes

Most pool company websites will tell you they do openings and closings without ever saying what that means. Here is the itemised scope, in the order the work happens.

A technician removing a winter cover during a pool opening$495Starting, + chems

Pool Opening

  • Brush off, remove and fold the winter cover for storage on the property
  • Lower the cover anchors
  • Remove winterizing plugs and reinstall all baskets and returns
  • Reassemble all pool equipment
  • Initial vacuum to waste (pulling debris straight out of the system rather than through the filter) or netting of the pool
  • Prime the pump (fill the housing so it can draw water rather than air), start the systems and check for proper operation
  • Add the initial dose of chemicals — we shock the water (a heavy oxidising dose to clear the winter’s organic load) and balance it to spec

Chemicals are billed separately. The customer is responsible for having the water up to the appropriate level before we arrive — a pump that runs dry is a pump that fails, so this one matters.

Pool Closing

  • Spot vacuum or leaf net to remove debris as needed
  • Lower the water to proper winterizing levels
  • Chemically treat the water with winterizing chemicals
  • Winterize all plumbing lines and equipment — we blow out the lines (force the standing water out with air) and purge the equipment so nothing is left to freeze and split
  • Cover the pool

Chemicals are billed separately here too.

Chemical & Equipment Checks

  • Check and balance water chemistry, and chlorinate to the correct residual
  • Empty baskets as needed
  • Empty and restart a robotic cleaner as needed
  • Backwash the filter as needed (reverse the flow to flush trapped debris out of the medium)
  • On-site filter rinsing or swapping, up to once a month, for cartridge systems
  • Check equipment for proper operation

Weekly and biweekly schedules are available. Every customer gets a sheet after each visit recording what was tested, what was done, and anything we noticed.

One thing to be clear about: this is a chemistry and equipment service. We do not vacuum, brush or skim pools as a standalone weekly service. If you are looking for a pool cleaner, we are not it — and we would rather say so now.

The Decision

How We Work Out Whether to Repair or Replace

This is the question people actually want answered, and most pages dodge it with an age rule of thumb.

We do not use one. Depending on its age and condition a pool heater may be worth repairing or may need replacing, and the honest answer is that you cannot tell from the outside. So we run a diagnostic on the unit first and decide from what it tells us.

$150

A service call covers up to the first hour of diagnosis or repair. Where a repair will hold, we repair. Where the diagnostic says the unit is done, we say that instead of selling you a repair twice.

A Pump That Has Begun to Cavitate

The sound of vapour bubbles collapsing against the impeller, usually meaning it is starved of water rather than failing on its own. Fix the restriction and the pump often has years left.

A Heater That Fires and Then Cuts Out

Frequently a pressure or flow fault upstream, not the heater. Replacing the heater would not have fixed it.

A System That Will Not Hold Pressure

A seal that has gone, or a fitting that has lost its bond (the mechanical and electrical continuity between components).

Corrosion or Scale on the Internals

This is where water chemistry history matters, and it is the part a service record makes visible.

Merlin and GLI

Custom Safety Covers — Merlin and GLI

We install custom safety covers only, made by Merlin and GLI. Not stock covers, and not standard sizes off a shelf.

A custom cover is measured to your pool and its surround, and then racked and anchored to the deck so it carries load properly. That is the whole point of a safety cover as opposed to a winter tarp, and it is why the fit has to be right. If you are pricing a standard-size cover from a retailer, that is a different product and we are not the people to sell it to you.

We also repair and replace existing safety covers.

Equipment We Service

Pumps, filters, heaters, liners, automation and salt chlorine generators. We service, repair and replace equipment from these manufacturers.

And on the commercial side: BECS, Stenner, Blue-White and Chemtrol controllers and feeders.

Variable Speed Pumps Are Worth a Separate Mention

Single-speed pool pumps can no longer be sold new for most in-ground applications under federal efficiency rules, so a failed single-speed pump is usually a variable speed pump replacement decision rather than a like-for-like swap. That changes the maths, and it is better to know before the pump fails.

Who We Work For

Residential and Commercial

About three quarters of our work is residential and a quarter is commercial. Commercial pools sit under a different regime — public pool licensing and inspection in Ohio is handled by the local health district, so a commercial pool in Solon answers to the Cuyahoga County Board of Health while one in Aurora answers to the Portage County Health District. We work across five of them.

Service Area

Where We Work

We serve the eastern suburbs of Cleveland and the Route 91 corridor.

There is no mile radius on that list, because it varies by service type and time of year — safety cover work travels further than a weekly chemical check, particularly out of season. If your town is on the list, we work there. If it is not, ask.

The Proof

Why People Call Us Back

Family-Owned Since 2012

We have been family-owned and operated since 2012, and Matt has been in the pool trade for more than thirty years. Between the crew there is over fifty years of experience on the water.

Experience Mostly Buys Pattern Recognition

A pool is one system, so a fault in one part surfaces as a symptom somewhere else — and the symptom is usually the misleading bit. A technician who has met that pattern before finds the cause on the first visit. One who has not changes parts until the symptom goes away, which is how a single job becomes three.

What the Warranty Covers

Products we install carry the full manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by manufacturer and generally runs between one and three years. We do not offer a separate workmanship guarantee, and nothing on this site should be read as one.

Straight Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you service above-ground pools?

No. M & G Pools services in-ground pools exclusively. We do not service, repair or supply equipment for above-ground pools, and we do not service hot tubs or spas.

Do you build pools?

No — we are a service company. We service, repair and replace equipment on existing in-ground pools, install custom safety covers, and handle seasonal openings and closings. We do not do new pool construction.

How much does it cost to open or close a pool?

Openings and closings start at $495 plus chemicals. The itemised scope for each is listed above, so you can see what that figure covers.

Does your maintenance service include cleaning the pool?

No. Our chemical and equipment checks cover water chemistry, basket emptying, filter backwashing and an equipment operation check, starting at $72 per visit plus chemicals. We do not vacuum, brush or skim pools as a standalone service. Netting and vacuuming to waste are included inside an opening or closing package.

When should I open and close my pool?

We recommend early to mid April for opening, to prevent algae growth and get any problems resolved before the heavy part of the season. Most people start closing after Labor Day, though we have customers who leave their pools open into November.

My heater is old — should I repair it or replace it?

Depending on its age and condition it may need replacing, but it is best to run a diagnostic first to determine whether repairing or replacing is the right call. A service call is $150 and covers up to the first hour of diagnosis or repair.

What areas do you serve?

Twinsburg, Solon, Hudson, Chagrin Falls, Pepper Pike, Gates Mills, Moreland Hills, Beachwood, Orange Village, Bratenahl, Cleveland, Aurora, Macedonia, Stow, Bainbridge, Bath Township and Waite Hill. We do not publish a mile radius because reach varies by service type and season.

What brands of pool equipment do you work on?

Hayward, Pentair, Raypak, Jandy, Sta-Rite, Fluidra and Zodiac on the residential side, plus BECS, Stenner, Blue-White and Chemtrol controllers and feeders on commercial systems. We service, repair and replace equipment from all of them.
